Job Description

Position Overview The Environmental Trainee position with the Department of Environmental Protection is an exciting way to begin your career in environmental work. You will build valuable skills while helping keep Pennsylvania's air clean and healthy while training to become an Air Quality Specialist. Responsibilities Compliance Checks: Conduct inspections of air pollution sources and review records to assess compliance with permits and regulations Enforcement Support: Investigate complaints, document violations, and assist in preparing enforcement actions Data Entry: Input inspection results, emissions information, and related records into database systems Sampling Activities: Collect air, fuel, and material samples to support testing and compliance evaluations Complaint Response: Investigate public air pollution complaints and recommend steps to resolve identified issues Program Participation: Assist with asbestos program inspections, reporting, and certification tasks Work Schedule and Additional Information Full‑time employment Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday‑Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part‑time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high‑speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Bethlehem. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $51,971.00 (before taxes) Minimum Experience and Training Requirements Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or An equivalent combination of experience and training. Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree. Special Requirements All positions require possession of an active motor vehicle license. Other Requirements You must meet the Pennsylvania residency requirement.
