Job Description

CalPortland is seeking a motivated Electrical Engineer to join the Engineering & Design department within our manufacturing operations. In this role, you will support plant-wide electrical and control systems that power the production of cement, concrete, and asphalt across the western United States and Canada. You will apply your electrical engineering expertise to design, maintain, and improve reliable, safe, and energy-efficient systems that are essential to our sustainable manufacturing processes. As an Electrical Engineer, you will be responsible for developing and reviewing electrical designs for new installations, upgrades, and modifications to production lines, material handling systems, and auxiliary equipment. You will prepare drawings, specifications, and calculations for power distribution, motor controls, variable frequency drives, instrumentation, and automation systems, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards. You will collaborate closely with mechanical engineers, process engineers, maintenance teams, and operations personnel to translate production requirements into robust electrical and control solutions. You will troubleshoot complex electrical and control issues on plant equipment, including motors, drives, PLC-based control systems, and instrumentation. Using a structured, data-driven approach, you will perform root cause failure analysis, recommend corrective actions, and implement improvements to increase equipment reliability, uptime, and safety. Your responsibilities will include supporting preventive and predictive maintenance strategies by helping to define procedures, standards, and spare parts requirements for critical electrical components. This position will also support capital and improvement projects from concept through commissioning. You will assist in scope development, cost estimating, equipment selection, and technical review of vendor proposals. During installation and start-up, you will provide on-site technical guidance, coordinate with contractors, ensure adherence to design intent, and help develop testing and commissioning plans. Clear, concise documentation and effective communication with project stakeholders will be essential. CalPortland fosters a collaborative and dynamic environment, and you will work cross-functionally to drive innovation and sustainability within our plants. You will identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption, improve power quality, enhance system safety, and support the integration of advanced automation and monitoring technologies. Your role will involve keeping current with industry best practices, relevant electrical codes, and digital tools that can enhance system performance and reliability. Safety is central to our culture, and you will help champion electrical safety practices in the field, including adherence to NFPA 70E, lockout/tagout procedures, and company safety standards. You will participate in safety reviews, risk assessments, and training, helping to ensure that all electrical work is planned and executed with a strong safety mindset. Working at CalPortland offers the opportunity to contribute to large-scale, impactful projects that support infrastructure development and sustainable construction. You will gain exposure to a wide range of industrial equipment and control systems, while developing your technical and project management skills. Within our supportive culture, you will collaborate with experienced professionals, pursue professional development, and help shape continuous improvements in our manufacturing operations. This role is ideal for an Electrical Engineer who enjoys hands-on plant work, solving technical challenges, and contributing to a safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible operation.
