Job Description

American Sign Language Interpreter This position is within the special education program to support students with hearing impairments during school activities. The interpreter provides signing, collects data on student progress, and assists with completing assignments. The interpreter reports to the teacher and building administrator. Essential Functions Work closely with the teacher of the hearing impaired, classroom teacher and student’s family to develop and support appropriate learning interventions. Provide interpretation services and assistance to a student with a hearing impairment. Assist classroom teachers in the general education program in techniques of instructional programming and adapting materials for hearing impaired students where appropriate. Assist the physical education teacher and librarian by adapting regular program activities to meet the individual needs of the hearing‑impaired student. Assist hearing impaired student with academic, non‑academic, and sign language skills, including the use of computer technology as appropriate. Assist in directing activities for the visually impaired student to maintain the student’s safety at all times. Collect, analyze, and report on student learning data in order to make appropriate adjustments to the student learning program and instruction. Work cooperatively with a building team in planning, supporting and providing instruction, as appropriate. Plan, develop, and contribute to appropriate IEP paperwork as required for each assigned special education student to ensure compliance with federal state and district procedures. Demonstrate positive relationship skills with students, parents and district staff, maintaining ongoing and open communication. Use technology to provide challenging instruction to students of all learning levels. Possess knowledge of and adhere to Governing Policies and District Regulations and Procedures. Participate in special projects as assigned and perform related duties and key responsibilities consistent with the scope and intent of the position. Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Ability to support the student through interpretation in the school setting, both in academic and non‑academic interactions. Ability and willingness to take directions, accept responsibility and work as a member of an instructional team. Ability to assist hearing impaired students in an instructional capacity while teaching the skills towards independence. Education High School Diploma or equivalent. Experience Previous successful classroom experience in working with students, preferably with hearing impairments. Required Testing None Specified Certificates and Licenses Certification in American Sign Language (ASL). Valid WA State Driver’s License and appropriate insurance required. Must maintain current any certification or license listed herein and held at hire date. Continuing Education/Training That which is authorized by the supervisor and required to be effective in the position and to maintain certification.
