Profile of a Natick Educator

JOB GOAL: The Director of Physical Education, Health & Wellness will provide visionary leadership and operational oversight for the Physical Education and Health programs across the Natick Public Schools, Pre-K through Grade 12. This position will direct the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Model in support of the District's commitment to the health, wellness, safety, and physical development of all students and staff. The Director will serve as the district's lead advocate for a comprehensive, equitable, and data-informed culture of physical and holistic wellness.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Master's Degree in Physical Education, Health, or Administration Required

Professional Certification: Valid Massachusetts DESE license as a Physical Education Teacher (512) and/or Health Education Teacher required

  • Valid Massachusetts DESE license as a Director/Supervisor or other applicable administrator license required, or demonstrated ability to obtain within a defined timeline upon hire
  • Candidates holding both a teaching license in Physical Education or Health and an administrator/director license are strongly preferred

Specialized Knowledge:

  • Thorough understanding of and commitment to the principles and practices of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice as they relate to student, staff and community engagement and cultivation
  • Deep knowledge of the Massachusetts Physical Education Curriculum Frameworks and National Health Education Standards (NHES)
  • Knowledge of the Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program (CSPAP) Framework
  • Familiarity with social-emotional learning (SEL) principles and their integration into health and physical education
  • Thorough understanding of and commitment to the principles and practices of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice as they relate to student, staff, and community engagement

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience as a classroom teacher in Physical Education, Health, or a related field at the elementary, middle, or high school level
  • Experience in a department head, curriculum coordinator, or leadership role in a public school district
  • Experience developing, delivering, and evaluating professional development for educators
  • Experience building and sustaining community partnerships in support of school health and wellness initiatives
  • Experience with Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Classroom, etc.) and student information systems such as PowerSchool; will train the right candidate

Skills:

  • Strong instructional leadership skills with the ability to coach and support teachers at all levels
  • Effective communicator in both written and oral forms across all levels of an organization
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated ability to use data to inform program decisions and drive continuous improvement
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with teachers, administrators, families, and community partners
  • Flexible, organized, and able to meet ongoing, time-sensitive deadlines
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced, supportive environment that nurtures student and staff growth
  • Bilingual skills, especially in Spanish and Portuguese, are highly desirable

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB (not limited to)

Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment

  • Provide district-wide instructional leadership for the Physical Education and Health programs, PreK12, ensuring alignment with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, NHES, and CSPAP Framework.
  • Lead the review, development, and implementation of a coherent, vertically aligned Physical Education and Health curriculum across all grade levels and schools.
  • Collaborate with building principals and teachers to ensure high-quality, standards-based instruction in Physical Education and Health at every level.
  • Develop and monitor assessments and data systems to evaluate student progress and program effectiveness in Physical Education and Health.

Wellness Leadership

  • Assist in the formulation and ongoing refinement of the District's health and wellness plan in alignment with the District Improvement Plan and School Improvement Plans.
  • Support the development of a well-defined social and emotional climate that enhances health, growth, and development in collaboration with health services, counseling, psychological services, and social services.
  • Create systems and processes to track schools' progress in attaining a culture of wellness utilizing quantifiable, data-driven rubrics and methods of continuous evaluation.
  • Coordinate with community stakeholders on behalf of Natick Public Schools health and wellness initiatives, leveraging partnerships to enhance and expand the WSCC model.

Professional Development & Staff Support

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate professional development for Physical Education and Health teachers that is current, research-based, and aligned with district and state priorities.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, observation, and instructional feedback to Physical Education and Health teachers across all schools and grade levels.
  • Evaluate existing District practices and direct the development of additional or increasingly comprehensive services for students, families, and staff as needed.

Equity & Organizational Leadership

  • Work with district and school leadership to identify and address systemic barriers that limit student, family, and staff members' equitable access to physical education, health programming, and wellness resources.
  • Identify and address bias and its impact on access to health and wellness opportunities for all students and staff.
  • Support the development of the District Improvement Plan and School Improvement Plans by contributing a physical education, health, and wellness lens to district planning processes.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Deputy Superintendent or designee.
