Location: 100% remote position with a preference towards candidates located on east coast or central time zones

We are seeking a proactive Program Underwriter with deep property experience to manage all aspects of our program business, collaborating with MGAs and reinsurers to foster successful, long-term partnerships. Reporting to the Chief Underwriting Officer, responsibilities include project management, audits, due diligence reviews, monitoring and oversight, and handling of referrals.

Individuals who have experience in multiple lines of business is needed with a strong preference towards individuals with expertise in property insurance.

This position is not eligible for employment-based visa sponsorship. Candidates must have current authorization to work in the United States that does not require employer sponsorship now or in the future.

• Manage and monitor assigned programs in accordance with Obsidian underwriting and business standards and corporate risk appetite.
• Establish guidelines, procedures, controls, and bordereaux, in conjunction with other functions (finance, accounting, actuarial, claims) for programs to be produced by MGA and other Program Administrator partners.
• Monitor, track, and analyze each program in accordance with underwriting guidelines and protocols to ensure profitability and identify any issues that may materially impact profitability.
• Ability to develop and produce regular reports measuring Key Performance Indicators for internal stakeholders and key reinsurance partners.
• Perform and coordinate underwriting audits with all relevant functional team members needed to perform tasks and produce an audit report for due diligence reviews and ongoing audits.
• Evaluate and assist in reviewing MGA and reinsurance agreements and prepare underwriting guidelines working with the MGA contract.
• Evaluate and assist legal and compliance in the review and drafting of policy forms.
• Prepare underwriting and renewal information for presentation and approval of Obsidian Underwriting Committee.
• Manage due diligence process, including presentation to Obsidian leadership team at program implementation.
• Approve and place facultative reinsurance to support individual program accounts, as directed.
• Produce program annual production, rate and profitability targets for MGA and Obsidian Leadership team.
• Present quarterly program updates (for select accounts) to Obsidian leadership team.
• Establish a market presence at industry conferences and hold regular meetings with clients to discuss program specific underwriting matters.

• Bachelors’ Degree; Post-Graduate degree and/or industry certification/designation
• Ideally 5-10 years of underwriting experience with substantial prior program underwriting experience
• Property insurance experience including experience reviewing and interpreting property modeling output and property structures
• Ability to operate independently in a remote work environment

• Strong analytical ability in review of general agency contracts, reinsurance agreements, underwriting guidelines, and GL, Property, and other relevant policy forms.

• Strong presentation skills
• Need to be a team player with effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with a dynamic team across all insurance functions including accounting, compliance, product development, finance, business development, legal, actuarial, etc.
