Location: James River Elementary and Matthew Whaley Elementary supported by the Departments of Student Services and School Leadership

Job Summary


Under the direction of the school principal and assistant principal, the Student Success Coach for Elementary Schools supports the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional success of students through the implementation of positive behavior supports, restorative practices, attendance interventions, and family engagement initiatives. This position works collaboratively with school administrators, teachers, counselors, families, and community partners to promote a safe, supportive, and inclusive school environment that fosters student achievement and positive school culture.


The Student Success Coach serves as a visible and proactive leader within the school community by supporting schoolwide behavior expectations, coordinating student interventions, assisting with crisis response and safety procedures, and helping students develop the skills necessary for successful participation in school and interpersonal relationships.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of schoolwide multi-tiered systems of support and/or positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS), restorative practices, and social-emotional learning initiatives.
  • Assist school administration in promoting a positive, safe, and inclusive school climate.
  • Monitor and address student behavior concerns using restorative, de-escalation, and developmentally appropriate interventions in alignment to the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Conducts conflict mediation, problem-solving conferences, and restorative conversations with students.
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to support classroom management and behavior intervention strategies.
  • Conduct classroom observations and provides feedback and support regarding student engagement, classroom management, and behavior interventions.
  • Monitor student attendance, behavior, and intervention plans and assist in implementing attendance improvement strategies.
  • Participate in Student Support Team, MTSS, Child Study, Section 504, and other intervention meetings as appropriate.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of Student Success/Assistance Plans and behavior intervention plans.
  • Support student transitions into and within the elementary school environment.
  • Establish positive relationships with students and families to encourage student success and family engagement.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and community agencies to support student needs.
  • Assist with supervision of student arrival, dismissal, hallways, cafeteria, playground, buses, and school activities/events.
  • Support school safety, emergency response, and crisis intervention procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to student discipline, attendance, and interventions.
  • Facilitate parent conferences, student meetings, and informational sessions as needed.
  • Collaborate with counselors, social workers, psychologists, nurses, and administrators to provide coordinated student support services.
  • Mentor identified students to develop positive decision-making, self-regulation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Assist with professional development related to behavior supports, restorative practices, and student engagement.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
  • Bachelor's degree required with a valid Virginia teaching license and a minimum of three years of successful teaching experience.
  • Progress toward or completion of a master's degree in administration and Supervision.
  • Eligible for or holds a Virginia certification in Administration and Supervision (PreK-12).
  • Experience working with elementary-aged students and families preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of MTSS and/or PBIS, restorative practices, social-emotional learning, and behavior intervention strategies.
  • Ability to establish effective professional relationships with students, families, staff, and community stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, conflict resolution, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in challenging situations while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Ability to analyze student data to identify areas of concern and implement targeted interventions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats.
  • Demonstrated ability to support an inclusive and culturally responsive school environment.

May supervise or coordinate the work of assigned support personnel, student support staff, and related programs as directed.

Performs duties under the supervision of the building principal or appropriate administrator.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements


Highly diverse and complex duties. Must have a high tolerance for change and the ability to work on several projects and assignments concurrently. Strong interpersonal skills are required in working with diverse groups of students, families, staff, and community stakeholders. Must demonstrate initiative and assume responsibility for working productively in a fast-paced school environment.


Must have the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to enter data into a computer terminal; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person and on the telephone; understand and follow oral and written instructions; and possess the physical agility to supervise students throughout the school campus and lift up to 25 pounds.
