Job Description
Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies is a regional magnet program for gifted high school students. Substitute teachers at MLWGS instruct students and facilitate their learning in the absence of the regular teacher.
A mandatory VIRTUAL orientation will take place on August 20 through Microsoft Teams.
This person will work alongside great teachers, get to know the students and staff, and make a difference in our community!
Primary Responsibilities:
Supervises students.
Provides classroom instruction to students as outlined in lesson plans.
Creates a classroom that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
Maintains a safe and orderly environment.
Maintains established routine of the school and classroom procedures as assigned.
Maintains and reports accurate records of attendance.
Communicates clear notes on class activities conducted and student behavior to the regular teacher.
Maintains a professional appearance as an example to students.
Remains at school for the academic classes (as needed), unless otherwise instructed to leave by the Assistant Director.
Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Maintains reasonable rules of conduct that encourage self-discipline and responsibility.
Communicates effectively with students and parents when needed.
Meets and instructs assigned classes in the location and times designated.
Completes other duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements:

Education and Experience:
Must have a minimum of 60 college credit hours.

Physical Demands:
Position involves sitting and/or standing most of the time in a classroom setting; exerting up to 10 pounds occasionally. Occasional stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying, and repetitive motion. Frequent reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and grasping. Constant talking, hearing, and viewing various types of close visual work.

Work Environment:
The noise level will vary depending on daily activity. It, at times, is very quiet in the classroom but often, as in the cafeteria and/or school assemblies, is moderate to very loud. The employee must meet deadlines and must report to class and/or duty assignments on time. The work environment includes inside and outside areas. The work environment includes exposure to sunlight, risk of being bitten by animals or insects; exposure to environmental allergens (grass, weeds, pollen, and trees), and occasional exposure to solvents, degreasers, pesticides, and/or herbicides.

Salary Rate: $17.00/hour for applicants with a bachelor's degree or higher. $15.00/hour for applicants without a degree but with at least 60 hours of college credits.
