Position Summary Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, is hiring a Vessel Captain for the Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences (DMCS), Rutgers University Marine Field Station (RUMFS), and the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve (JCNERR). The position is part‑time, on‑call, hourly, up to 19 hours per week. Key Responsibilities Maintain USCG‑authorized Captain’s license and operate three offshore small vessels safely. Communicate safety procedures to scientists and students during environmental sampling missions. Conduct routine vessel maintenance and repairs (hydraulics, engine components, pumps, etc.) and winterize vessels for storage. Deploy scientific equipment and instrumentation in accordance with research projects. Demonstrate a safety‑first approach, lead confidently, and instruct compassionately. Attend additional training as required (e.g., STCW, MOTC). Position Details Title: Vessel Captain Part‑time, on‑call, hourly, up to 19 hours per week. Primary port: RUMFS in Tuckerton, NJ; other ports as required. Position status: Part time. Salary $35 – $50 per hour. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Three to five years of relevant professional experience in an administrative or supervisory role. Current United States Coast Guard Master Captain’s License (25‑ton minimum). Valid driver’s license. Preferred: 100‑ton USCG Master Captain’s License, TWIC Credential, STCW credential appropriate for vessel tonnage, welding and metal fabrication knowledge. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Excellent communication skills; computer literacy. Ability to lift 50 lbs., work in hot/confined spaces, operate in cramped quarters, and during bad weather. Climbing and ladder ability; accessing compartments through hatches and sills up to 2 ft. Pass a USCG physical and random drug screening. Availability 7 days per week and willingness to work more than 12 hours per scheduled trip when needed. Safe driving record. Benefits Medical, prescription drug, and dental coverage.
